I, [[Freya Aswynn]] was born in Holland in November 1949 to a strict, Roman Catholic family. As a child I displayed natural psychic abilities, and this, combined with my reactions to a hostile family environment and subjected to serious physical, mental as well as some sexual abuse, which was not recognized by the system as it was then, prompted the official diagnosis that I was maladjusted'.Freya Aswynn

Entrusted to the so-called 'care' system, I was institutionalized for nine years. From the age of ten to the age of nineteen . My intelligence, combined with a capacity for aggressive self-assertion, allowed me to emerge from this ordeal more or less psychologically unscathed at the age of 19. Deprived of any secondary education, I resorted to taking on cleaning work, until I met and married my first husband, George.

Somewhat older in years, George introduced me to the basics of philosophy (particularly the works of Friedrich Nietzsche) and classical music, predominantly Richard Wagner. He also was the first person who ever spoke to me about the esoteric nature of the runes. Sadly, after two years of marriage, George died of cancer; but he left me with a pension that, for the first time, gave me a measure of financial independence.

Determined now to make good my lack of learning, I taught myself English and German by means of books and tapes. Aslaug

At the same time, I took an interest in the development of my long-suppressed psychic gifts. I received my first paranormal training in a spiritualist environ-ment, and from there progressed to the study of Rosicrucianism, Astrology, Cabbala and Thelema. At the age of 30, I felt unable to progress further in Holland and left for England, where I was soon recognized by prominent magicians and witches as a natural.

With their help and training, I was initiated into the mysteries and made rapid progress as a ritual magician and High Priestess.

I was initiated into Wicca by Jim Bennet under the supervision of Alex Sanders in 1980, I then in April that year got involved with a Gardnerian coven and from there formed my own coven with the High Priest Lionel Hornby. This coven was active for a number of years.

The next major turning point for me was a life-changing spiritual and magical experience: an intense, spontaneous invocation of the God Woden. I took this to be a calling to open up the Northern pathway, which until then, was virtually non-existent within the occult community.

I embarked on an intensive study of the runes and began work on my first book, "Leaves of Yggdrasil" (revised and updated in 1998 under the title, "Northern Mysteries and Magick") Within Pagan circles, this initiative was at first viewed with scepticism and suspicion as to whether I had a covert political agenda (which at that time was often the case with some Odinists).

I soon overcame these perceptions and won the respect and affection of the majority of the Pagan and occult community.

Over the last 14 years I have been extensively involved with lecturing and giving talks all over the world. It was my great fortune to become acquainted with ‘Hrafnar', a women's Asatru group where I was taught Seidhr or Spea craft. I have may loving friends in the US.

On a social level, realizing that I was not suited to living in a normal nuclear family, I became actively involved in 1981 with a community of which I was a founding member and ran for a number of years as Managing Director, together with my partner Lionel Hornby and a good friend, a well known pagan-friendly Jewish feminist-activist and a supporter of gay and bisexual rights.

In 1993 I decided to choose a celibate path, for my own spiritual reasons.

After Lionel's death in 1994, I sold the house and with my share I bought a large farmhouse in Scotland in 1996.

I founded another community named "Gladsheim". initially rather unsuccessful due to errors of judgment leading to me being ripped off, I soon pulled it around with the help of friends within the Scottish Pagan community, and as of now (1998/1999) Gladsheim is on the road to success once more. Gladsheim is open to contributing visitors by prior arrangement, however no bums, freeloaders or druggies, I have had enough of them.

in 1993 I had started up a UK branch of the Ring of Troth, originally an American organization founded by Edred Thorsson and James Chisholm. The UK branch soon attracted members in other European countries and, re-named the Ring of Troth Europe, rapidly became a successful and progressive Northern Tradition group. Having led this organization as Steerswoman for a number of years, I recently stepped down from this role and other positions of power.

I now concentrate on teaching and guiding as an Elder in the Ring of Troth and am actively 'on call' to members for advice and counsel when required. I am in the process of setting up a facility for rune readings on the net, www.aswynn.co.uk I also run a correspondence course, which at present is being updated.

I have just completed another book ‘Principles of the Runes' in the popular series "principles of" published by Thorssons UK, this was a one-off contract and I am now back working for Llewellyn on the second volume of "Northern Mysteries"

Invoking

I Am True to the Aesir! My Oath is sealed with blood!

The underneath has been written in answer to the various comments through the years that I, Freya Aswynn am not Asatru but Wiccan. I was Wiccan from 1980to 1983. I was Rosicrucian from 1972 till 1979. no-one accuses me of being Not Asatru but Rosicrucian. Why???

What is it about 'Wiccans' which invoked the red rag in some Americans who adopted a Native European Religion as their own? Traditionally the religion of the Aesir was very tolerant and we still see this expressed in the Nordic countries, but more on a social and cultural level. It's part of the Northern European Folk Soul. Hence we have a caring welfare state.

And why this hatred towards a 'sister' pagan religion? It's almost like a Southern Baptist raging against Catholics, both being Christian of course. Perhaps they themselves did not divest themselves of the baggage of their earlier religion, something I have been accused of (wiccatru).

In '83 I dissolved my coven in order to devote full time to my Native gods: the Aesir and by inference the Vanir and other wights of Light. I am therefore Asatru i.e My Troth is to the Aesir; and yes I was 'professed' in June 1984,in my turn I professed people as well, Heimguest for one.

Apart from the Gods themselves, the attraction to the Norse system was first and foremost the Runes, and what ever little bits of the Lore was available in either English or Dutch, in the early eighties.

Being true to the Norse/Germanic gods is living according certain values.  Being true to the Aesir does not mean that I can't respect, cooperate with, or appreciate 'others'. However I couldn't 'worship' them.

Without exception these comments questioning me being Asatru are all from men across the pond. Usually by people who rant against 'universalism', hiding behind internet anonimity of course.

These people often being of ambiguous genetics themselves, need to prove to themselves and their peers how 'Nordic/Germanic' they are. They prove that not by showing their worth, but by denying anothers' worth.

Again I have not found this attitude in native born Northern European Asatru.

However they are a dwindling but vocal minority, probably just starting out. Young and wet behind the ears, I wager.

The vast majority of Asa folk across the pond have done incredible work in reconstructing and redefining the religion as well as ensuring the preservation of old crafts and arts, keeping the old ways alive, and publishing their interpretations and lore, putting enormous amount of effort and funds into their studies. and sharing. These are the ones who will be remembered as the first generation Asa folk outside Europe.

Being Asatru is open to every one, the Gods will accept the Troth of a sincere person of whatever genetic or cultural origin. It's insecure people who will question and dispute this and - guess what? They need this kind of security from their peers, they have to feel part of a crowd, a club. They derive their self-worth from the opinions of other people!

Propping each other up, swilling beer and talking shite!

If they are looking for a religious enemy to fight, stop looking for a soft target such as middle-aged Wiccans, or gays. I advise them to enlist, go to Afganistan and kick some Taliban ass.

I am Northlander I was born and raised in a traditional tolerant Dutch culture, I also look the part. I don't depend on others opinion whether I am Asatru or not, this is between me and the Aesir.

Nor would I ever question an other's Troth to the Aesir, certainly not on the basic of race or any prior spiritual paths walked.

I have been, as you can read in my biography, involved with the runes for more than 25 years. During that time I have written several books on the subject. Before I was intensely involved with the runes and Asatru I already had considerable experience in Magick and was born with natural psychic gifts. I've always been able to ‘do readings' for people.

Originally Astrology was my method, until the runes came along, and with these Odin. Many have had readings from me through the years. If you should wander across this web page and wish to offer an evaluation of a reading no manner from how long ago, please email me for possible inclusion on this web site.

I have found the runes most useful for answering life's questions: perhaps to illuminate a current situation or dilemma and extrapolate probable future(s) so as to offer more choice and personal empowerment.  the runes tend to answer very accuately providen the question posed was well phrased, the runes are more 'immediate' as an oracle. Some of my readings have transformed lives and I have the testimonials, which I will put on this site once I have obtained permission.

A selection of reading types and a personal horoscope package are available ranging in price from US$10 to US$93. All payments, regardless of their country of origin, will be processed in US dollars.

Example readings can be found in my books and on this site; Yggdrasil Reading.

Some of the most common questions I have been asked in the past are about financial concerns, health and well-being, domestic harmony, crop production, happiness, love, marriage, home purchases, job aspects, school progression, travel arrangements, as well as more esoteric and occult matters.

So don't be shy or embarrassed, ask what you will and I will do what I can to answer your questions, and where needed, offer practical/magical/spiritual advice.

In my experience a reading, whatever the results, should be accompanied by empowering advice where needed. Wyrd can be shaped - one does not have to be a hapless victim of circumstance. Readings will often contain information of which you were unaware, issues that are weighing heavily on your mind, and feelings that are known or have perhaps been  repressed to your subconscious.

It goes without saying that everything pertaining to the reading  - including your email address, postal address and everything else you tell me -  is  completely confidential.
